The
Curative, Cleansing and Edible Medicine Cabinet for
Beauty and Wellness Spring 2009

I
know it takes more than a few creams to rebel against
aging. My favorite beauty and wellness staples are probably
right in your home. Most skin care concerns can be addressed
with the basic staples found in my kitchen or medicine
cabinet. For the most common skin and wellness ailments,
I’ve got less than ten cure-alls. A few that I
believe should be in everyone’s home include Hydrogen
Peroxide, Epsom salts and Coconut Oil. My holistic medicine-cabby
and age rebelling tips will rescue distressed skin from
within.

Hydrogen
Peroxide 3%
• Soothes rosaceous skin.
• An anti-inflammatory agent for the gums and
on the skin.
• Anti-bacterial (a hospital staple for so many
years). Helpful on acne, reduces skin redness.
• Produced in our own bodies as a line of defense
against invading viruses, bacteria's and parasites.
Topically Hydrogen Peroxide can help with skin rashes
and infections.
-
Epsom
Salts
• One cup in the bath soothes tired muscles.
• Sprinkle in your palm and mix with bath gel-you've
got a skin scrub. For really dry skin, use coconut oil
with the salts.
• Taken internally it helps with constipation-add
one teaspoon Epsom Salts to warm water. For a de-tox
flush you can add ½ teaspoon of flax seed oil,
coconut oil or castor oil add to the salt water.
-
Vicks
Vapor Rub
• For flu like symptoms, rub Vicks on your chest
and take a warm bath. Sleep with the balm on your
chest.
• If you have a fever, put Vicks on the soles
of your feet and cover with a pair of cotton socks.
Sleep in them.
• Hangover Helper - Dab Vicks on your fingertips
and massage temples and earlobes. Then take a warm
bath followed by a cold rinse.
-
Carmex
• Hard to beat this great moisturizing balm for
chapped lips, dry cuticles and red parched skin under
the nose.
-
Coconut
Oil
• A natural anti-oxidant and great skin protector.
• Helps with chapped lips, hands and dry skin
on elbows and knees.
• Softens calloused skin - Put it on your feet
and soak feet in a bath.
• It is a great base to mix with your favorite
essential oils to make your own body moisturizer.
• A healthy oil to cook with great flavor. I use
Coconut Oil for making pancakes, and for all my Asian
meals.
-
Tea
Tree Oil
• Tea Tree Oil works well for any fungus, skin
infection, gum infection, ear infection.
• Essential oils must be diluted with a carrier
oil, gel or in a water base.
• Never use Tea Tree in full strength.
• To use on the skin-Take one small dab of Coconut
Oil and mix to this one or two drops of Tea Tree Oil.
Rub on the infected area.
• Add a drop of Tea Tree Oil to a diffuser or
a vaporizer to soothe a headache or sinus infection.
-
Apple
Cider Vinegar
• A rinse of Apple Cider Vinegar will leave
your hair so shiny.
• Added to a bath, your skin will feel so refreshed.
• It is naturally antiseptic. A swipe on the
skin is a great skin tonic.
• Contains pectin, minerals, enzymes, essential
acids and beta carotene. Drink this skin hydrating
multi-vitamin by adding a capful of Apple Cider Vinegar,
with a teaspoon of honey to a glass of water.
-
Aloe
Vera Gel...
• A first aid must for burns, insect bites, skin
allergies and inflammation.
• You can drink food grade Aloe as a digestive
aid and helps with stomach upsets. Aloe taken internally
helps to nourish the cells.
• Apply Aloe to soften the skin and regenerate
skin cell tissue (which is why it works on burns).
