Reflections From Marlene
I love the idea of hibernation. It is not the literal
translation that appeals to me, but the process of going
within, hibernating within oneself. Winter appears naturally
Zen to me with colors that are pure and minimalistic.
When the leaves have left the trees, it symbolizes our
own de-leafing to leave the clutter behind. The snow
white days that cleanse the landscape remind us to cleanse
our minds. Before the New Year, we reflect by looking
at what has past, and what our hopes and dreams are
for the future. Our present reminds us that each action
we take creates our reality. So make thoughts count
by taking each one seriously. I wish you that you rest
like a bear and move as purposefully as a penguin! And
most of all I wish that your dreams come true.

our Featured ISS Staff Member
You’ll know Jenny when you are greeted by her
friendly smile and easy-going personality! Jenny specializes
in holistic facial and body treatments. Her philosophy
is that when people are healthy on the inside, it will
naturally exude to the outside. For this reason, Jenny
believes that relaxing during any of her skin care treatments
is just as important as the technical aspects. In addition
to being a certified esthetician and health consultant,
Jenny is working towards becoming a registered nurse.

Beauty Tip: Your skin and lips will be
drier during the winter months as the extremes of inside
heat systems with cold outside weather takes a toll on
the skin. Moisturizers don’t penetrate well if there
is an accumulation of dead skin cells so it is helpful
to exfoliate more often. Find the exfoliater that best
suits your skin. If you have very sensitive or rosaceous
skin, then avoid scrubs or granular exfoliators. Instead
use an AHA serum. Jenny prefers ISS Mineral Deposit with
Copper, Zinc and Alpha Hydroxy acid. For thicker skin
and skin prone to oily areas, Jenny recommends ISS Micromanage
Dermabrasion Kit.
Don’t
forget your lips!
Her home tip is to brush your lips with a clean
toothbrush. To clean it, dip it in hydrogen peroxide,
rinse with warm water and then lightly brush your lips
to remove dead skin. Follow with a lip balm. Your lips

Pumpkin Flan – serves
8 individual desert cups or one 9 inch pie pan for a
“crustless” pie
-Medium
Pumpkin (to make about
2, 1/2 cups of puree)
-Fresh
squeezed Orange: ¼ cup
-Cinnamon-1
tsp. , Nutmeg 1/4 tsp., Ginger ½ tsp. *freshly
grated is best
-Black
Strap Molasses-One tablespoon
-Agave
Sugar ½ cup or Dark Brown Sugar ¾ cups
-3 Eggs-lightly beaten
Cut the pumpkin in half and put the cut pieces down
on parchment paper or baking dish. Roast for 40 minutes
(until a fork is easily inserted in pumpkin)
Take
out of oven and puree in a blender. In a large mixing
bowl, add in whisked eggs, and remaining ingredients.
Mix and blend the ingredients together. Pour into oven-friendly
(porcelain, ceramic or glassware) for individual servings
or a 9” pie pan. Bake for about 45 minutes or
until a knife is inserted in center and comes out clean.
Let sit for two hours. Serve warm or chill in the refrigerator.
Optional: Add a dollop of homemade whipped cream or vanilla
ice-cream.
